Books and Beer

Print
Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
Pair up with a local brewery or pub for a book night geared towards millenials
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
A prepaid event that is a combination beer tasting and book pairing session. Working from the theory that every book has a "best paired with beer" combination (see Lit with a Twist at http://litwithatwist.com/), the seasoned bartenders and beer gurus provided by the local breweries would recommend beer to be enjoyed while reading various books. The event cost would include an appetizer/tapas menu, 6 beer tasting flight and a Metropolitan Library t-shirt. This would raise awareness of the Library and Library services among the 20-35 age range. Proceeds could go to any of a number of Library funds.
Why should we select this project?:
Targeting up-and-comers at the beginning of their professional journeys will pay off for the library 20 years down the road. By providing an event so outside the "traditional" library model, we will be reaching a younger generation of individuals who may well decide to join the Library Board in the future. We will also be catching the interest of a demographic that traditionally sees library usage as storytimes done with kids, not as a vibrant organization that can provide benefit at all stages of life.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
We would need to be aware of any and all alcohol licensing laws that would pertain to such an event. We would need to identify a brewery or bar that would be willing to work with the library.
