Libraries around the country host a lot of programs about civic education and civic engagement for their communities. However, we may not be focused on our own staff, boards, and leadership team’s civic literacy and skills. Your role as a community anchor institution means you need to be involved in the discussion and not just host. In this webinar, EveryLibrary’s executive director, John Chrastka, will share insights into how effective libraries can understand and operationalize their own role in the "civic conversation". Participants will learn strategies to build civic literacy within their organizations, develop actionable plans for engaging in civic discussions, and strengthen their role as active contributors to civic life. From budgeting and taxes to legislation and public policy, the library itself should be an active participant in shaping civic life.

Can People Really Change? Practical Advice for Leadership Development Nearly all leadership development programs target individual growth and the development of soft skills, such as emotional intelligence, influencing skills, relationship management, etc., with 63% of organizations using executive coaching to support leader growth. But efforts to develop soft skills, which are based in personality, are hard to quantify, study, and measure, making ROI difficult to calculate. This begs an important question that we get from clients every day: Can you really change your personality? If so, how much and for how long? What strategies or interventions work best? And what’s the cost? Hogan’s Jackie VanBroekhoven Sahm, director of global learning and development, and RyneSherman, PhD, chief science officer, will answer these questions and share practical advice for leadership development professionals. We can’t wait to see you there! If you’re excited as we are and want to get a head start on learning about this topic, check out our blog,“How Stable Is Personality?” |

Rekindling from Burnout: Lessons and Strategies for Public Library Workers Library workers provide support for patrons in distress on a regular basis. A hard and busy day might leave us depleted. Though we feel the effects of secondary trauma, we may not have the tools to describe and process the experience, leading to our own emotional distress. Without a practice of self-care and a network of support and solidarity, the stress of service work can evolve into guilt, cynicism, numbness, chronic exhaustion, and diminished creativity–legitimate responses that contribute to burnout. In this webinar we will discuss: Trauma exposure at the library, how our library’s “Rekindling from Burnout" project came about, and strategies & actions you can try at your library to build resiliency and networks of support. Additionally, we will share several resources created and curated by the Brooklyn Library staff.
