Sharing – Sara Schieman, Mabel C. Fry Yukon Library
- Teen advisory boards – four years. Fifteen teens this year from 6th to 11th grade.
- Recruitment: volunteering is a draw – must be on teen advisory board to volunteer, during summer have flyers available and give out applications.
- Meetings: once a month on the second Monday. Typical meeting: sign in, eat, icebreaker, what you’re reading and why, update on helping with kid’s programs, what’s coming up for YA programs, and current projects.
- Meetings run from September through May. She gives opportunity for officers to be elected, or she will run the meetings if they choose. They always choose for her to run the meetings.
- They do the book display in the teen area entirely on their own. They also do the summer reading kick-off themselves.
- They all come to volunteer on Martin Luther King day together since they are out of school.
- Goal is to have teens eventually become part-time library employees.
- Retention: She sends postcards before every meeting. Teens can participate year after year.
- Goal is to have more teen advisory boards by the end of 2004/ Strengthen existing ones
MLS Teen Advisory Boards
- A sytemwide advisory board made up of a representitive from each branch advisory board is the eventual goal.
- Ronna at Edmond, Emily at Village, Melissa at Midwest City and John at Southern Oaks all currently have active Teen Advisory Boards and can be contacted for additional ideas/suggestions.
- Think about: Three things to happen that would help support your advisory board.
