In some locations, despite a decrease in total number of registered participants, we are seeing an increase in the total number of minutes being read. This is most pronounced at Choctaw, Harrah, Midwest City, Nicoma Park, and the Village. What are you doing differently to encourage members to read more?

One thing that Meghan has done was create a prominent display, that highlights summer reading and has many books that focus on building a better world. It has gotten great response and we have to add new titles every day.
I've heard MC Access staff on numerous occasions engage members in conversation about Summer Reading, including asking if they've been logging their minutes. That may have helped contribute to the increase in minutes being logged. While there are tremendous benefits to using Beanstack, I suspect there could be some "out of sight, out of mind" as well as digital divide issues that accompany going online (even though we do make paper logs readily available). This makes it all the more important for us to take the extra effort to directly chat with our members about the program and the benefits of completing it.
At ED we encourage parents/kids to log time however possible and hand out the paper logs. They can hand the logs to our Teen Volunteers at the Celebration Station when they visit and the teens will put their time into Beanstack for them! Does anyone else offer this option?
We do this at Choctaw as well! It really helps with the people who are reluctant to use computers.
We offer this option as well at SO and it is critical in ensuring participation at our location. Many of our members are reluctant to learn how to navigate Beanstack and keep track of a SR login. Other members don't have quick access to digital devices at home and paper is their only option to keep track of their minutes. By offering an assortment of colorful paper logs and letting our members know that our staff and volunteers will do all of the back-end heavy lifting for them, we tend to ease minds and gain new participants. Our staff and volunteers let our members know that all they have to do is read and record in whatever way works best for them. We are here to make the process as easy, stress-free, and fun as possible!
