"The short answer is that the Collection Management (formerly Materials Selection) staff will use analytical tools to identify needed adjustments in the collection. This information will be passed on to Access management at the individual library level and they will assign the physical weeding process to Access staff members. All staff will be able to provide input to the collection management process through formal and informal meetings with the Collection Management staff.  For those of you who like a fuller response, the strategic portion of collections work -- planning for, adding to, and assessing the ongoing value of items within the collection -- will be the responsibility of the Collection Management Librarians (currently known as  Materials Selectors). In addition to determining which materials are to be included in the collection and identifying usage targets and standards, they will also be charged with using the analytical tools available through the ILS, our materials vendors, and other data providers to deliver deselection criteria, lists, and data to the Access Services staff members responsible for maintaining the inventory of each library. While the Access staff will be responsible for pulling damaged, overly-used, and other items per the plans articulated by the Collection Management Librarians, they won't be responsible for the overall shaping or enhancement of the collection. Much of the work will be driven by data collected about the availability and use of specific items, subjects, genres, and formats. As the Library begins to shift it's collection to the ""Collection Anywhere"" model, the focus will be to have the right materials and content available and moving. The emphasis will be on highly circulating materials in the libraries, where shelf real estate is highly valued, while housing less used, but still useful and necessary titles in an offsite warehouse (the Collection Anywhere Center or Warehouse). Collection Management staff and Marketing staff will work with the Access service staff to develop standard merchandising processes and display building techniques to jumpstart less-active items and increase usage. When certain items begin to fall off in use, and Access Staff are unable to spark member interest, the items will be removed to the Collection Anywhere Center to be assessed by Collection Management staff.
