Outreach Opportunities for July and August

Below are some Outreach opportunities for your Engagement staff during July & August. The target audience is not the same for all these events, so you may want to consider this when sending library staff.

FAQ's:

Will I ever have to man a library table alone?

When there is only one person per shift who has signed up, and no Outreach person available, I will cancel, so no one will need to man a booth alone.  There are exceptions, for instance: If the event is expected to have a small turnout, then there may be an occasion to have one person for short periods of time at the Library table. However, if you are ever manning a library table by yourself and it was too busy to handle one person, please let me know, so I can make sure more are available next time.

What happens if we must cancel MLS table at a community event?

There are hundreds of events in our large community, it is not preferred, but since we are doing so many events, it is fine if we must cancel one here and there, I just want individuals to know that if not enough people signs up they can expect to hear from us, to cancel the event.

How will I find out the details about an event I sign up to attend, such as where to park, etc.?

I will send you all the information prior to the event, about parking, etc. If you need to park in the Arts District Parking Garage, we will provide parking vouchers in an envelope in the outside pouch of the branded suitcase we call our Outreach Kit, and names will be listed on the envelope.

What happens if it is too cold or too hot for an outdoor event?

In most situations, involving outdoor events the decision to close will be made before the event begins, and this email will be sent out to all staff who are signed up to attend. When the event closure happens after an event has started or decision to close library table due to extreme weather factors we follow similar procedures to Unexpected Library Closure. Since the situations are different in outdoor events we have different temperature ranges, such as if lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit or higher than 90 degrees Fahrenheit for an uncomfortable stretch of time, up to one hour.

These procedures include contacting the Regional Director over Outreach Services. If, at the time of closing the event or library table, staff have more than 3 hours left on their shift, go to your regular work place, if there is less than 3 hours, then staff may go home and use personal AVL leave to cover the time not worked. Outreach staff can be available to go to a library to read to children or when they have work to complete, they can work in their office.

How do I sign up to attend a community event with MLS table?

Please email LaVetta Dent [email protected] and Kelley Riha [email protected] three thing, which event, date, time (shift). We will ensure your name is on the list to attend the event you reference.
