PMC Meeting: Job-specific Competencies

Meeting Date/Time: Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Meeting Location: Conference Call

Attendees: Michele Gorman, Kelley Hoffman, Kiley Ingram, Karen Litteral, Kristine Magers, Ben Mead-Harvey, Julia McConnell, Todd Podzemny, Risa Sargent, Ashley Welke, Lorraine Kituri (consultant), Colleen Shannon (consultant)

The Performance Management Committee met via conference call to discuss job-specific competencies. The Singer Group used feedback from staff to develop a first draft of competencies for several Public Services positions. The job-specific competencies we create will be used in job postings to give applicants an understanding of the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the job. They are being developed as part of this committee's work because the competencies are also being considered as part of the new performance management system.

The work we are doing here is a start to a process that may include developing job-specific competencies for additional positions and so will provide a point of reference for any future competencies. We discussed job-specific competencies for the following positions:

  • Library Manager I, II, and III
  • Children's, Teen, or Adult Librarian
  • Youth or Adult Engagement Specialist II
  • Access Specialist II
  • Access Specialist I

During the meeting, our committee gave feedback on many aspects of the competencies The Singer Group drafted. The next step is for Singer to revise and update the competencies, after which they will be sent to the Senior Managers of Libraries and the Chief Library Officer for review. Once finalized, both the job-specific competencies and the core competencies developed as part of the performance management project will be communicated to staff.
