Program Description: 
Oklahoma is a center for Native American culture. Learn to make a basket using traditional Native American techniques with teacher Sydna Yellowfish. All materials will be supplied and you can take home a basket you made yourself. Our class is designed especially for young people in grades 3 to 6.

How & why does this program meet the goals of the MLS?: 
Native American Basket Making for Children is an opportunity to not only learn a traditional craft, but also learn about cultural traditions of Oklahoma Native Americans, a distinct characteristic of our community. This is an interactive program during which children will learn under the guidance of a knowledgeable teacher how human cultural differences make people unique, but also how they share much in common. This program accomplishes the goal for people to learn smarter.
Which Strategic Plan Response/Goals does this program meet?: 
Satisfy Curiosity: Your libraries are centers that offer access to civic, cultural and community enrichment opportunities.
Why will this program be successful?: 
The program has the appeal of being a hands-on program and an unusual chance to learn a traditional craft. Our teacher has taught the class for different age groups at Bethany Library previously and her classes have always been full.
How will success be measured/determined?: 
Attendance of 12 to 15 students. Each student will take home a basket they made in the class.

The library has several books on Native American basket making, Displays of library materials for the program should more broadly represent Oklahoma Native American culture through books, movies, music and other resources.

No supplies are needed for this particular program.
Final Comments: 
The fee for the instructor will include materials that she will provide. The materials require preparation prior to the program such as dyeing and soaking in water to make them supple. The instructor will construct a basket center from buck brush for each of the students as a starting point for each student's project. Sydna Yellowfish was first engaged as an instructor for the library basket making classes on the recommendation of Julie Ballou. The instructor has designed the program for children in grades 3 to 6, so children at least 8 years of age may be admitted to the program.
