Kindle eBooks

The directions below are not for the Kindle Fire. The easiest way to read eBooks on the Fire is to do so in the browser. You can also install the OverDrive app on the Fire. All directions on this page are for downloading eBooks to a Kindle that is not in the Kindle Fire family.

Search for & checkout eBooks for your Kindle:

  1. Visit http://emedia.metrolibrary.org
  2. Beneath the search box at the top of the page, click on Advanced Search:

  3. On the Advanced Search screen, choose Kindle Book from the All Formats drop down menu, check the Show only titles with copies available box, and then click Search:

  4. Choose your title by clicking on its cover image.
  5. Click the Borrow button then sign in with your library card number and last name:

    coben

  6. Click the Download button, check Kindle Book, then click Confirm & Download:

  7. This will redirect you to Amazon's website where you will see the Get library book button:

  8. If you aren't already signed in to your Amazon account, you will see the button above and you will be prompted to sign in with your Amazon account's email address and password after you click on it (Use the email and password associated with your Kindle). If you are already signed in to your Amazon account\after you sign in, you will see the following display:

  9. Upon clicking Get library book, the title should either immediately be delivered to your Kindle or it will be delivered the next time you sync your Kindle or it connects to a WiFi connection.

NOTE: An active WiFi connection is required for wireless delivery of a title to your Kindle. If you own the 1st or 2nd generation Kindle or the Kindle DX (these are the only Kindles that are not WiFi capable) or you do not have an active WiFi connection, read the instructions below for transferring a title to your Kindle via USB.

Transfer eBooks to your Kindle via USB

Kindle titles need to be downloaded to a computer and transferred to a Kindle using a USB cable when:

  • You do not have access to WiFi (Kindle titles can only be transferred via Wifi or a USB cable, i.e. not a 3G or 4G connection)
  • You have a 1st or 2nd generation Kindle or the Kindle DX
  1. Follow the directions in the Search for... section above
  2. After clicking the Get library book button in the final step, click on the Download now button:

  3. You will be prompted to open or save the file. Choose Save and select a location that is easy to find (we recommend the desktop but if you are using Internet Explorer 9 and/or Windows 7, it might automatically save the file in the C:\Users\Owner\Downloads folder). Once the file has been saved, connect your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable that came with your Kindle:

  4. When connected to your computer, your Kindle will go into USB drive mode.
  5. Your Kindle will appear as a drive in the same location where external USB drives, e.g. flash drives, usually appear on your computer. For Windows users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" locations. For Mac users, the Kindle drive will appear on the desktop.
  6. Open the Kindle drive. You will see several folders inside, one of which will be named Documents. This is the folder into which you will move the eBook you downloaded.
  7. Locate your eBook and drag and drop it (or cut and paste it) into the Documents folder.
  8. Safely eject your Kindle from your computer (For Windows users, this is the same process as ejecting a flash drive. For Mac users, drag the Kindle drive from your desktop to the trash) and unplug the USB cable. The eBook will now appear on your Kindle.

Return your Kindle eBook early

After the checkout period has expired, the eBook will no longer be accessible and it will check itself back in automatically. If you would like to manually check in the title before the lending period has expired, you may do so using the following directions.

  1. Visit the Manage Your Content and Devices section of Amazon's site and if not already signed in with your Amazon account, do so.
  2. On the Your Content tab, check the box in the Select column of the eBook you wish to return then click the '3 periods' icon in the Actions column. A menu will pop up and you will select Return this book:

NOTE: If you choose to download eBooks from Metropolitan Library to your Kindle, Amazon will automatically keep a history of all of the eBooks you have checked out. Metro Library has no say in this procedure. If you have privacy concerns, you can delete your history of eBooks by checking the box in the Select column and then clicking the yellow Delete button above it.
