Free tutoring in Greater Metro

I am putting together a list of free tutoring opportunities in the greater metro area and would like some input. Please let me know what you think should be added, detracted or changed. Thanks!!

Free Tutoring Available for School-Aged Children

Group Excellence provides free Supplemental Educational Services (SES) Tutoring for qualifying students (must qualify for free and reduced lunch). For information, contact Michael Lara: (918) 841-2999 or 1-800-439-7803 or e-mail [email protected].

Whiz Kids matches tutors with at-risk students in the Oklahoma City, Crutcho, Crooked Oak and Putnam City school districts. Teachers select students to participate in Whiz. For information, call (405) 602-2815 or e-mail [email protected].

Helping Hands Tutoring provides after-school tutoring to students in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Muskogee who attend schools on the state’s Needs Improvement list. Capitol Hill Library, 334 SW 26, Oklahoma City, provides volunteers who offer Homework Help assistance from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. To schedule an appointment, call (405) 634-6308.

Norman Public Library Tuesday Tutors offers free tutoring at the library,225 N. Webster Ave., each Tuesday evening during the school year. University of Oklahoma students work one-on-one with students to provide assistance with any school subject or assignment to middle and high school grade children. The program is co-sponsored by the library and Crossroads Youth and Family Services. For information, call (405) 701-2620.

Moore Public Library “Your Tutor” Program is available during the public school season from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, except during holidays and school vacations. The library, located at 225 S. Howard Ave., partners with Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College to provide free tutoring for students in grades 7 through 12. No advance registration is required to participate. Each session lasts approximately one hour, with most school subjects available for individual tutoring assistance. Students check in at the Information Services desk to be paired with a tutor. No Child Left Behind – The No Child Left Behind Act specifies that if a school does not achieve Adequate Yearly Progress for three consecutive years, the school district must provide free tutoring or supplemental academic enrichment services to eligible students in addition to the instruction provided during the regular school day. Hey John! This is a late reply, but you might think about adding the GED classes offered at some of our libraries. I know Edmond offers this, and NW will starting in August.

You might check with Linda Dudek at OCCC Adult Learning Center to see what other related programs they might offer. 405-682-1611 ext 7121.
