YALSA Young Adult Services Symposium 2022 - Reports

Mary - Anime Boot Camp - reviewed icebreakers, activities and discussion questions for anime clubs, programming ideas, genre cards and notes, recommended popular titles
Lacy - Passive Interactive Programming – based on The Passive Programming Playbook, how to engage the community with regular sticker challenges, scavenger hunts, and feedback boards.
Sheldon - Collaborative Storytelling – shared examples including D&D, improv, and fanfiction; information about how role-playing games shape communication, identity discovery, learning value and inspiring confidence
Emily - How to Talk to Youth About Human Trafficking – libraries can be protective factors, please review presentation in the SharePoint for posters and more information
OES Updates
Winter Reading recap – Kristin – still have mugs and coupons if any locations need more, over 2200 signups with 70% completing so far, drawings will be March 6
Summer Reading – Kristin and Emily – provided updates, Scholastic book order has been placed, training is coming in April, toolkits in March and April, new Saturday afternoon performance of Neighborhood Arts at Penn Square Mall
Various Teen Services Updates – Emily - gathered feedback on Teen Services newsletter, thanks to Sheldon for helping with Scott Reintgen author visit, a few spots are left for this year’s Pivot field trips
Summer Volunteers – Heidi – next training at BI on March 7 for summer volunteer supervisors, volunteer applications and opportunities have been created for this year, next Leading Volunteers with Confidence training is March 15
Gardening – tool lending coming soon, FAQ and info sheet were shared out recently, program marketing pieces coming soon, landing page is live at /metrogrows, tools being delivered this week and everything goes live March 1
Sharing and Programming Discussion
WA – watercolor painting class, mental health awareness passive/display
AL – focusing a lot on outreach and school visits, bristle bot painting, poetry activities, preparing for spring break programming
RE – helping teens with interviews and applications, spring break events, weekly art projects, looking forward to tool lending and discussions about gardening
NW – D&D expanding to 3 DMs and 15 intergenerational participants, crochet and board game programs did well
VI – monthly take home kit, growing a Teen Advisory Board, St. Patrick’s Day-themed escape room during spring break, kids from John Marshall Middle School coming to author visit in March and that helped create relationship with that librarian
BI – D&D going well with completely new audience, 3-D printer escape room, ReadOKC on the Go book bus coming March 4, Joy Harjo coming in April
MC – fandom trivia night once a month (Marvel, Five Nights at Freddie’s), guided acrylic art program,
CH – after school games, trading cards, blackout poetry, school visits to CHHS and charter schools, preparing for teen volunteers
BE – second Saturday game events, thinking about journaling and manga/webtoons book club
CL – cookie decorating with local baker, Cricut crafts, Teen Advisory Board planning recycled boat challenge as a grade school event, coding program at middle school, outreaching a lot
