Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that provides civil legal assistance to low-income persons throughout Oklahoma. Pamphlets and other informational resources can be ordered here: https://www.legalaidok.org/pamphlets/

  •  OKC Law Office covers Oklahoma County. Non-Profit law firm that serves all 77 counties in Oklahoma. Civil law services for people who cannot otherwise afford an attorney. Does not include instances where people qualify for a court-appointed attorney. 
  • Works with many community organizations like YWCA and Palomar. Oklahoma’s landlord-tenant laws do not favor tenants. People can use their services for landlord-tenant cases in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. 

  • Right to Council Program provides free legal advice and representation if you are at risk of eviction and live in ZIP codes 73111, 73119, and 73120. 6th Floor of the courthouse are setup to assist people who are there for court cases regarding landlord-tenant laws and are at risk of eviction can help them the day of their case. 

  • People are also welcome to call if they aren’t sure that their case would qualify and they can walk them through the process and help them find the correct assistance that they need. 

  • When people call they may need to leave a message, but all calls are returned quickly. 

  • OKLegalNet.org 

  • Has access to the language line to assist people in just about any language. 

  • Overview of eviction process.  

  • All services are free. The only time a client would need to pay for something is if they need to pay a filing fee. But even in those instances, there may be grants or funding available to help people cover those costs. 

 

Updates 

Summer Reading – Kristin and Emily 

  • Reminder for everyone to do their Summer Reading training this month. Available online through SumTotal and some in-person trainings. 

  • RIF recipient is Latino Community Development Agency. 12 Million points is our Community Goal. 

  • OES and some SR committee members were at the SC yesterday inventorying the SR prize books and reboxing prizes. 

  • This year’s alternate prize is a clear tote bag. It is too big to take to a Thunder game, but okay for most other events. 

  • We have not started routing out materials except for the Rack Cards. Should arrive end of this week or early next week. Rack cards are bilingual/2-sided. PDF is also available on the intranet. 

  • IHOP is going to be a sponsor for this year. Coupon for free short stack of pancakes (2 pancakes) for all registrants. Possibly also donating gift cards for drawing prizes.  

  • YMCA is also sponsoring drawing prizes: 10-day and memberships for grand prizes. 

  • Thanks to all Summer Reading committee members. 

  • Huge thanks to everyone who helped out with the School Library Media Specialist Breakfast last week. 

  • Lots of resources on the Summer Reading Intranet page. 

  • Flat Spoticus is available on the intranet. 

  • We will have stickers for people who sign up for Summer Reading.

Sharing and Programming Discussion  

Kadey (DC) - Revamped writing group that she had tried to start last fall. Changed name to The Writers Room and already has 6 people signed up. Trying to rebrand the DC book club (The Shelf Watch) to see if that improves attendance. AAPI programming in May kintsugi workshop. Thanks to Armando for sharing the outline. 

Sharon (SO) - Adulting classes: Life Safety is coming up. End of May is home buying. Storm Chaser coming in mid-May.  

Cait (SO) - Doing events with South OKC Chamber, upcoming one with local judges to discuss legislation. June – Kids crafts/activities for adults (fingerpaint and play-doh), Star Wars Day bath bombs that are Death Star shaped. 

Tyler (BI) – May 2nd Cinco de Mayo salsa Fest. May 4th Star Wars Day (trivia, escape rooms, Jedi camp for kids), Book Club is going strong, Genealogy in June, Gallery in July.  

Anna (BE) - Book Club, Coffee and Crafts, Maker Meet-up, Job Interview Workshop with Work Ready Oklahoma, Zumba in the park and Tai-Chi in the Park, making hats for Infant Crisis Services, Cricut Cake Toppers, Audry is a former Spanish teacher and started a Spanish conversation group. Organic pest management with the Gardening Grant, Bethany is getting a Smithsonian Exhibit (Voices and Votes) in December. 

Jessica (OES) - Gardening grant classes planned through July. Tool Lending is still happening and an updated bookmark is coming to promote the tool lending program and new discover backpacks. Mobile Market is underway and the updated flyer goes through September. If you need support for better traffic flow, talk to Jessica. CLC classes starting soon. 

Scott (CL) - Finished diabetic nutrition class (4-week program) from OSU extension. Saturday craft programs have been increasing in popularity and had people attend from Edmond. No bake pineapple pies was the most recent one. 

Ann (RE) - National Poetry Month. Give a poem a day away to library guests. Larry Daniel from Oklahoma Herpetological Society led a program. Looking forward to Alpacas coming in May. Doing candle making program at wellness center. 

Kimberly (CH) - Had the eclipse watch party with telescope and other resources from NASA grant. Día de Niños last Sunday and saw over 500 people. 

Andrew (DN) - GeekCon on May 18, anime screenings, OKC improv, escape rooms, costume contest. Computer help in the computer lab led by Stacy Harris. Lawyers in the Library had over 40 people. Pride Flag take home kit, bird watching kit, Community and Coffee. 

Amy (VI) - Dungeons and Dragons ended because their dungeon master moved, but then quickly found a new DM and it will start up again in August. Vision board program. Poetry walk outside around the library. Worked with Library for the Blind to get braille. They will provide it for free for any program. Write-in program had 8 people. Bookbinding take home kit. Importance of hydration program. Firefly glimmer jar take home kit. Technology Tuesdays, open office hours to help people learn technology skills. 

Lynda (AL) - Outreach programs at 4 senior centers. Sun craft decor. OKC Mobile Market has been really popular. Grow with Us program. Food explorers program, next one is boba tea. Eclipse painting. AL grand opening is May 15. May 18 Echos of Tradition, Native American dancing. Following week, Meet and greet first responders. Maker space training for staff so they will know how to use their new maker space. 

Natalie (MC) - D&D for beginners. Met with the fire department and other community members to talk about numerous bogus calls happening in the community. Help older members of the community to connect with people so they won’t be as inclined to make bogus calls to have someone to talk to. Exercise classes to help with balance were recommended. July: Belly dancing, art contest for all ages (community will vote for the winners). Craft swap in August to help people use unwanted craft supplies. 

Cindy Martin (VI) – OHAI, SAIL, Summer Reading. Kudos to Amy for her poetry walk, it rained both times that she was outside working on it. 

Jessica (SO) - Darrie & Cheryll have been doing health and gardening classes. Snacking can be good for you with healthy choices. Container gardening. Breastfeeding friends. Minecraft meet-up. Beginning line dancing has been growing. Star Wars Day & Free Comic Book Day. Scavenger hunt. Silver Screen Society. SR Kick-off party on June 5th. 

Armando (WA) - ESL classes has grown, attendance has doubled. Will start an English conversation club over the summer to prevent the summer slide. Working with Claudia (CH) and CLC. Book club is under attended. Creative Writing Sunday groups. Kintsugi. Mindful Skills for Relaxation: Sand painting. Pride candle pouring party.  

Anne (ED) - Japan Society of America: The Way of the Tea. Lots of outreach to find presenters. Found artists to come do activities. Quilling club. Gardening club for adults. Nature Camp for Kids. Lots of adult programming on the calendar which is new for Edmond and it has been well received.  

Kristin (OES) - Neighborhood Arts. ASL Storytime. Sensory bags will be routed out next week. 

Emily (OES) - OSU-OKC recruiter contact is looking for adults who are interested in changing careers and wants to attend programs to talk to people about higher ed. Handout from Special Collections.  

Heidi (DVS) - National Volunteer Week - we are sending out a calendar with the therapy dogs to all of the volunteers. Additional calendars can be purchased for $10.
