Hearts at Stake
General Audience:
Young Adult
Genre:
Series :
The Drake Chronicles
Call Number:
YA Fic/HAR
Features:
Light and skinny; small typeface; not a lot of white space; fairly easy on the eyes to read.
Cover Notes :
Attractive cover, you can tell it's about vampires. Woudl be appealing to teen girls.
Blurb Notes:
"How do you resist a Vampire's kiss?" Inviting to teen girls, boys might avoid just because of the blurb.
Beginning, Middle, & End :
The Beginning is pretty engaging, but typicla of books of this nature. There is always a spunky teen girl who doesn't know when to keep her mouth shut and a boy who she doesn't like.
The Middle seemed a little more daunting because it was throwing around words that if you had not read the book up to that point, you would be lost.
The End was open, you could tell that there would be more books coming.
Style :
Seems to have more humor than most books of this type. Short sentences.
Pacing :
Fast paced with some action.
Format :
First person narratives that switches between the two female protagonists.
Characters :
Solange, Lucy, Nicholas; there are quite a lot of characters because one of the main characters (Solange) has seven older brothers as well as relatives.
Setting :
It seems to be set in present day, but because of the Vampires there is some Victorian stuff going on.
Theme :
Friendships; first love
Focus :
Character driven
Read-a-Likes :
Chronicles of Vladimir Tod series; Immortal Instruments series; Vampire Kisses
Hook :
Solanged is the only female vampire ever born, but she doesn't "officially" turn into a vampire until her 16th birthday, a fate that she isn't awaiting with any joy.
Brief Annotation :
You're Solange.
You have seven older brothers.
People you don't know are trying kidnap you.
And when you turn 16 you will officially become a Vampire.
Life sucks...but at least you have a best friend like Lucy.
