Outreach Business
Anita provided everyone with a current MLS adult programmers’ list and offered everyone business card holders to organize their contact information.
Dana discussed the upcoming fall music programming for the months of October and November. An Oklahoma bluegrass band, The Bonham Review, will tour the system in October and a traditional Hawaiian group will perform in November. Dana announced that Outreach’s October musical performances will be from Oklahoma-based groups for the foreseeable future.

Dana briefly discussed an article that Carrie Coppernoll of The Daily Oklahoman authored regarding the Noon Tunes program at DN.

Dana emphasized the value of the “community links” link found under the “services” menu on the MLS website. There are links to OK 211, Oklahoma Arts Council, and Get Reading Oklahoma, among other community resources. All reference librarians should be aware of these resources and where to access them.

Emily addressed numerous details about the summer reading program beginning in June. Promotional materials have been sent to the schools; libraries should receive theirs by week’s end. The Neighborhood Arts’ program schedule and prize/sponsor information will be included on the promotional materials. An intranet-based training program will also be available for staff review. All staff will be expected to participate in the training. Like previous years, envelopes containing materials and prizes will be disseminated. However, Outreach may transition to using booklets in future years. Other summer reading related details include:

  • The Oklahoma Redhawks are under new management and we will be unable to provide the traditional two tickets for Library Night at the Ballpark in the goal two packets this year. Only ONE ticket will be awarded per participant and they must physically claim their ticket in July.
  • Fronteir City and White Water Bay tickets are available once again, but they will not be included in the goal 2 packets. To mitigate previous issues (theft of goal 2 packets), the tickets will be located in a secure location (i.e. Circulation desk) for pickup.
  • Red Pin bowling tickets will be included as a new prize this year!
  • Children of MLS employees are welcome to participate in the program (AND be eligible for prizes).

The host of the recent program, Staying Safe: Sexual Abuse Prevention, cancelled the event at MC due to too few sign-ups. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! Dana requested that we have the presenter personally call her if they wish to cancel an Outreach sponsored event. Dana’s phone #s are: 606-3833 (work), 620-7905 (cell).

On a related note, Kelley Dalrymple voiced her concerns about where cancellation notes should be entered in Meeting Room Manager if a system-wide program is cancelled at a singular location. DO NOT place the cancellation notation in the “comments” field. Instead, enter the message in the “Setup Notes” field.

ED, VI and BI will be hosting local author, Harolyn Enis in September. The local Shakespeare in the Park group will be performing Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at ED, MC, and one other site tba in December of 2011.

Anita recently attended the annual Oklahoma Conference on Aging through OKDHS and came back with a number of new programming ideas. These include personal document organization for seniors, women and social security, will authorship, veterans’ benefits as well as other social services assistance. Anita will set the programs for a series and offer them to the branches.

Anita thanked everyone for their participation during Winter Readfest and announced that next year’s event will be a combined program (Booktoberfest + Winter Readfest) that will take place only for the month of February. Due to the exorbitant cost of the sign-up bags offered in previous years ($10,000!), other and more prizes will be purchased for participants.

Programmer sharing session:

Ruby (MSL): “Request-a-title” selections for ebooks will not be automatically placed on hold for customers. Please make sure they are aware of this. Also, many publishers have a two-three month delay in releasing some of the library-versions of new ebook titles. However, customers are welcome to visit the catalog and submit a “request a title” for any work.

Ruby also profiled a useful readers’ advisory book for the urban fiction genre entitled Urban Grit. MSL has gone through the entirety of the work and purchased every title that adheres to the MLS selection criteria.

Kelley (WA): Recent and upcoming programs include Sexual Abuse Prevention, coupon class, Wayne McEvilly on piano, Urban League on first-time home buying, and home weatherization methods from OG&E (Damon Polk, contact).

Ann Meeks (BI): E-reader info class, laughter Yoga and resume writing.

Julianna (VI): Tax assistance, SCORE, anger management workshops, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, local author visit.

Ann Aliotta (ED): History book club, knitting club, disaster preparedness course.

Harry (DN): International Festival (included music, art and food of disparate cultures).

Sharon (BE): Irish dancers, labrinth construction (hosted by Gail Peck, author of Oklahoma Labrinths), Mothers’ Day celebration, school of metaphysics on mind/body connection, disaster preparedness and an ice cream social.

Susie (CT): African American celebration, knitting and crocheting, water color painting, genealogy instruction for National Genealogy Month, and a “whoppers storytelling contest.”

Darrie (SO): Due to the recent SO location move, programming has been somewhat limited.

Wendy (DN): 2nd Sunday program, ESL, resume building and job searching, and research paper writing boot camp for teens.

Joey (RE): Juneteenth, movie presentations, social networking tips.

During the sharing session the group also discussed movie licensing rights for library presentations. Kim Edwards (DN) is a great contact for any inquiries regarding this matter.

Program presentations:

Kent Anderson (local author): Kent pitched future book talks in the library system for his upcoming title Cold Glory out in October 2011. This will be the first of a series of five historical novels based around the American Civil War. For contact details or other information, contact Dana or visit www.bkentanderson.com.

Sandi Burden (Yoga for seniors): Sandi’s proposed programming would consist of light yoga exercises for people 65 yrs. and older. However, younger individuals with mobility issues would benefit from her instruction as well. The instructor rate is $35-$45 per class (45 minute duration). You can contactSandi at – (405) 413-2724 or at [email protected]

Lacy Williams (local author): Lacy outlined a number of different course ideas, including book discussions/story creation, writing workshops and even internet searching for older adults. Contact Lacy at (405) 229-5851 or at [email protected].

Jim Pourtorkan (watercoler artist): Jim Pourtorkan is striving to bring watercolor painting back into the mainstream by offering instructional courses to the public. The course would teach participants basic painting techniques where the student creates a project that he or she gets to take home with them.
