Welcome and Announcements:
Everyone has been invited by the Pioneer Library System to attend the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature Award with Vera B. Williams and Virginia Euwer Wolf at the Sam Noble Natural History Museum on Thursday, October 22, 2009 @ 2pm.
Lisa handed out the indie booksellers book recommendation list asked the librarians to put them in the library for customers to use. She also passed around a plaque given to the library from the OKC Junior League in recognition for Trip Around the World.
Lisa talked about Trip Around the World and “El dia de los Ninos, El dia de los Libros” and programming opportunities/displays. Random Houses/ALSC/ Texas, Florida and California have resources on their websites.
Summer Reading:
What worked: The robocall with OKCPS and the link on the OKCPS website.
What didn’t work: Teen reading logs; envelopes out of order; packages stolen.
Online registration: Print out take to the library for prizes; Cybermars doubles for Summer Reading Computer and Summer Teen Volunteers could help with using the Cybermars computer.
Laptops for volunteers? Budget.
Idea – Have each library individually track their numbers/etc. on a computer.
Groups- cross reference group names. Have more than one way to search a child’s name.
Barcode assigned to each child … Username/Password system? or LC#?
Need some way to easily sign-up kids who need help – volunteers with computers?
Lisa passed out artwork for 2010 SR. CDs w/ manuals will be arriving soon.
Summer Reading Volunteers:
Heidi Port presented a World Café style gathering information about our experiences with summer volunteers.
Early Literacy:
Lisa asked librarian to engage in conversation with parents in libraries about reading to babies. She related a story in which Dana had done this and gave a board book from the Babies First Library Book collection.
Watched the Reading to Babies video (Lisa asked us to find things in the video that we could use to say to parents)
- Your baby loves your voice
- it’s never too early to start reading to a baby
- sometimes books become part of a game
- books came make difficult moments easier
- it’s a wonderful way to share connections and feelings
We are early literacy experts in our community.
If anyone wants Zero to Three journals routed to them to read please let Lisa know and she can send it around.
