Attendance: Emily Williams (OUT), Lisa Wood (OUT), Cyndi Selinger (CT), Lindsey Egle (DC), John Hilbert (SO), Kim Ventrella (RE), Suzette Felton (MC), Janet Brooks (MSL), Heidi Port (Vol/Dev), Kellie Bradford (PLA), Barbara Johnson (BI), Dana Morrow (OUT), LaVetta Dent (VI), Kim Edwards (DN), Mallory Weigl (VI), Teresa Matthews (ED).

Welcome, Introductions, Announcements

Emily welcomed everyone and introduced Mallory Weigl the new young adult librarian for the Village Library.

LaVetta shared how she handled a complaint about the upcoming Music of Iraq program. A customer was very upset about the program and LaVetta remained calm and used the form Individuals Comments on Library Materials and Information Access and crossed out the word materials and wrote in the word “Program.” This seemed to diffuse the situation.

Dana related a situation in which she was in a library and approached a parent with a baby and asked them if they were reading to their baby. She talked to them about the importance of reading to their baby and she gave them a board book from the Baby’s First book collection. She encouraged everyone to do this in their libraries.

Dana talked about her experience with witnessing the value of programming for military families. She said we are often a lifeline to the community because we are free, we are open and we give people something to do by providing such great programming opportunities for people to come to.

OK Go Association

OK Go Association visited with the group and explained the ancient game of Go. There are clubs and locations around the world. Several teachers and school clubs are doing this. It is an easy to learn game. Teens might be attracted to it because of its links to anime and manga. Free starter sets and matching funds are available from the national organization (American Go Foundation). More information is available at www.okgoplayers.org

Summer Reading 2009 wrap-up and 2010 preview

Emily handed out statistics from the last year and asked for feedback about Summer Reading.

Teresa (ED) said that the guitars were not a big hit at her library this year and suggested a water safe for an incentive for next year.

Suzette (MC) said the guitars were great and went over really well at her library, but she said the teen reading logs were confusing and many people asked how to use them. A discussion followed about the teen reading logs and a consensus was reached that we would not order the teen reading logs for the 2010 Summer Reading program.

Emily asked if everyone wanted to continue with the backpacks as a signup prize and everyone on concurred that this is a good signup prize and is well liked and used by teens. Many people said they would like the color of the bag to be neon blue for 2010.

A discussion of possible incentives for followed: Sunglasses were mentioned, as were water safes. Rowing, Kayaking and Sailing Lessons were mentioned. IPod Touch and water proof cameras were also mentioned.

Suzette (MC) has booked a dunk tank for the last week of July and she cautioned that if anyone else would like to do this too then they need to reserve it soon because the company said they get booked for these very early. Emily said she would email out the information.

Emily asked for programming ideas for Summer Reading 2010.

Mallory said she might have a contact for someone to teach Break dancing.

Hula Dancing was mentioned and someone suggested that Roy’s mother might be a contact for teaching this or knowing someone to teach this.

Skateboarding, Bow fishing, Noodling, Fly-fishing, Tie dyeing, Sand Sculpting, Creating Ocean Waves, Seashell Jewelry, Message in a Bottle, Sand Candles…these were all mentioned.

Booktalks

Emily handed out a list of the ALA 2009 Teens’ Top Ten books and discussed some of the titles on the list that she had read.

Kim Ventrella booktalked The Werewolves Guide to Life: A Manual for the Newly Bitten by Ritch Duncan and Bob Powers.

Lisa Wood booktalked It Wasn’t Much: True Tales of Ten Oklahoma Heroes by Jana Hausburg

Summer Volunteers

Heidi Port presented information that had been discussed at the Children’s Services Meeting in October about the Summer Reading Volunteers and using the World Café model she had continue that discussion. Building on the conversations that took place at the Children’s services meeting these are the questions that we discussed:

  1. How can we communicate these (meaning our past, profound) experiences to potential teen volunteers, giving them a level of expectation for volunteering?
  2. How do I create opportunities to make a difference in the life of a volunteer?
  3. What tools could I use to share my successes and discover other possibilities for using my volunteers?
  4.  In what ways could I access the experiences of others to build a better future for volunteers rather than repeat the past?
  5. How can I better prepare staff at my location to work with volunteers?
  6. What ways of validating volunteers are most meaningful to the teens and how can I begin or continue doing those things?
