Welcome and Announcements:
Emily introduced Suzette Felton the new YA librarian for the Midwest City library.
Emily discussed the Arts Council’s new teen advisory council. She asked for the librarians to spread the word to any teens who might be interested in serving on the council.
Emily handed out Twilight movie posters and bookmarks that can be given away as promotional items.
Izumicon, Tuvan Throat Singers, and the Wizard Rock Benefit Concert were among the other upcoming events discussed.
Emily showed videos from two different YouTube video contests that are taking place right now in Oklahoma. The first contest is being sponsored by Govenor Brad Henry and Kim Henry and is called My Take on Health http://sde.state.ok.us/MTOH/default.html .
The second contest is sponsored by the Oklahoma Bar Association http://www.okbar.org/youtube.htm .
Emily talked about and demonstrated the SirsiDynix Institute website. The Institute provides ongoing free professional development for the library community. All of the past presentations are archived and can be accessed as podcasts. www.sirsidynixinstitute.com
Materials Selection News
Janet said that she is looking forward to Melissa Weathers from Del City joining the Materials Selection staff.
Teen Pop Culture Quiz – Emily handed out a Teen Pop Culture Quiz from a Yalsa journal. Janet Brooks from MSL won the quiz.
Past Events
There was discussion about the Ghouls Gone Wild Parade, The Nerdfighter Tour, Teen Read Month, the Twilight parties, and The Big Read. Emily showed everyone the success of advertising an event on Facebook and explained how to do it.
Booktalk and Journal ArticlesEmily gave a booktalk about the book Paper Towns by John Green. Emily also discussed the journal articles “Stress-Free Programming for Teens” and “Dungeons and Gardens.”
Improv Games with Kelley Riha
Kelley Riha from Outreach Services came and demonstrated how to use improvisational games with teens.
Summer Reading ‘09
Emily discussed some of the programs that she is planning: Video Games, Grafitti Art, Henna Body Art. Discussion for other possible programs: Art classes; Talent shows; Bryan Dahlvang; Dance Classes; Sidewalk Chalk Art.
There was discussion about possible prizes: magnetic locker paper; video camera; classes at the City Arts Center; messenger bags; iron-on t-shirt kits; mini computers.
Sharing
MC – Twilight Party, Music Listening Party; does school visits every month, Anime/Manga Club starting up
BI - Horror Makeup
RE - Starting a book club at Douglas High School
SO - Twilight Party (Kim Ventrella from RE helped), Cosplay, Homework Help every week
DN - Twilight Party , Asian Festival, Miyazaki Festival in January
VI – Mystery Night (Suzette from MC helped), Anime club is growing in attendance
CT – Space theme with the children’s librarian for the month of Sept.
BE – Daniel wants to establish more partnerships with schools.
ED – TAG…hard to keep it consistent so her Manga club is serving as her TAG. They are designing T-shirts.
