Updates
Thank you to Del City for letting us use the meeting space. Introductions.
Free comic book day: First Saturday in May. Outreach will get the comic books from ODL and route them to you. Make sure to have at least one staff member working that day that knows what's going on. Go to the free comic book website to see the list of comic books being offered this year. We try to get all ages books but please make sure to be careful not to let children get teen rated comics. Buck at New World Comics offered his services to Annie but sadly they won’t be open yet. If you want to set up a bigger program, you should call him. He might even have his staff dress up and hand out for the comics for you.
We have lots of March programs coming up. Teen Tech, After School at your Library, Hunger Games - We just got the Hunger Games cookbook and the sound track.
Janet - Material Selections update
The Sequoyah masters list is available to look at on the Oklahoma Library Association website http://ola.oklibs.org/organization/committees/sequoyah.htm. Don't display these until next month. MSL has purchased copies of the books on the new list and you will be receiving them anytime between now and June. Only one title on the High School list wasn't owned already.
Please let Janet know if you have any glitches with I-WEED. She will pass the issue on to Jimmie so we can get them straightened out. The iPads are great for reference,
Teresa had a large visit from a school with about 50 kids where she had 4 staff in stacks using I-Pads to assist the teens.
Send your shelf management lists to your managers before you send them to Janet, if you manager approves it and tell you to send it on, please put a note in there that your manager has seen it and they told you to send it on.
000, 100, Easy, and Readers lists due on the 15th. Managers are receiving monthly updates on what's coming due. Normally you will get about 2 weeks to work the list.
Playaways are doing very good. Next year we will budget for all the full-service libraries to receive them. Ordering about 25 titles per month on a regular basis. Looking into possibly adding the Video players.
Heidi Port - Volunteer Services Update
Summer Volunteer Management software. The time sheets are currently being added to the website. Every volunteer in the whole system will receive a request, by USPS, to update their profile. They will get a user ID and a pass code. They must have an email address for their record to be finalized. When they sign up and validate their record they will receive a T-Shirt!
Go and check your listed volunteer opportunities, make sure that you have the correct info including the correct number of volunteers. If you only have 4 volunteers listed, when you have allocated 4 volunteers to the listing, it will disappear. Currently you will see test opportunities these (such as swaddling pigs) will not be in there when the program goes live.
Make sure to make your listing exciting! For reference Heidi suggested looking at Ralph Ellison’s listings. Check that all times dates etc. are correct. Put in your specific needs, such as volunteer will be required to attend training and work X amount of hours per week/month. Your listing will not be posted until Heidi approves it. Email Heidi when you have completed your listings to ensure they get published in a timely manor. Remember to create volunteer opportunities for any current volunteer.
Summer Volunteers will have to wait until Spring Break, March 16th to be able to register. As it stands now, volunteers no longer have to do HIPPA training.
When a volunteer arrives at your library, a staff member will have to log them in and out. This can only be done on a staff computer. Every staff member at your location should be able to do this for the volunteers. The link to the website to sign in will be on the intranet, when you click the link it will automatically recognize which location you are at and lead you to your specific sign in page. The volunteer will then tell you their username and password to allow you to sign them in. They will need to repeat this procedure to sign out.
You can only modify timesheets when logged in under the specific volunteer.
Someone at your location should have gotten the Supers Instructions page (handed out). Today you will receive 2 posters, one is a generic one that can be used year after year. It invites people to volunteer without giving too much detailed info. You can either use a plastic sleeve or use rubber cement to attach extra info to it that pertains to your current needs. When they printed the flyers this year, they also printed posters for this Summer volunteering.
If you have any questions about the software or anything else, please give Heidi a call and she will be happy to help!
Lynda Bahr - Come Read with Me
48-52% of our 3rd graders will not pass 3rd grade because of reading levels this year. We are attempting to come up with a plan to assist our children. We are forging new partnerships, finding out what other agencies are doing in our communities.
The big picture is we need Big people reading to Little people. We are doubling our volunteer numbers this year so we can have more of a one on one opportunity for the children. Send your extra volunteers to Lynda. We will be doing recruiting all over, teens, neighbors, family, friends. You can put out the posters and flyers in your library.
Come Read with Me is hiring a project specialist that will coordinate volunteers. There is a job description and a posting for this position. Also if you know of any youth assistants send them her way. Youth Assistants could be some of your older or past Summer Volunteers. Lots of schools require volunteer service. We will not turn down any volunteers. No maximum number of volunteers.
Melissa suggested adding the flyer to Facebook, Emily will add it to the site.
During the school year we present from around 4-5:30 M-F days.
Summer June 11 - July 20 9-12 M-F at 12-13 different locations.

Angela Thornton, DN – Steampunk
Steam Punk novels are starting to come out. Very popular. Ocotopodicon convention coming up in October will be held at Meridian Convention Center. Trying to help with marketing and possibly hosting programs. They have a "tea" every month, this month they are having a Mad Hatter Tea. We are looking to offer them use of our libraries for the teas in June, July, and August. Art Museum might be partnering as well, maybe a costume contest etc. If you would like to host one of the programs, email Angela Thornton. Anna said Belle Isle has hosted them before. They will dress up and talk about the tea that they are serving, and serve the tea from a very elaborate tea set. Material Selection has already bought some books on steampunk; Crafts, Jewelry making, lots of different things.
Tea themes for the upcoming months are:
- June - LARP (Live Action Role Play)
- July- Airships and Steam punk Groups.
- August- Steam punk Scholars.
This will really help to reach out to the 20 something groups that tend to move towards not coming into the library. Will go along with After Hours and Book of Love type events.
Kim Terry - Marketing Stuff
With the new intranet, lots of people are having trouble finding the proper forms to fill out. MAC forms are under the tab for News & Media. All new things added will show up on the right hand side of the page. Currently trying to add more “downloadables” that you can get at your own library and print out yourself. Would like to get people to use the forums more, these can be a great tool if we use them! Nancy Lytle has been out so trying to keep up and catch up with everything she does so if things come out slower or you aren’t getting your supplies, please be patient. Try to check your upcoming program info in Events, it's lot of work to change and update after the info has been added to the INFO magazine. Kim really likes the programs that YA presenters offer.
Hunger Games - John Lindsay and Anna
The following are examples of Hunger Games programs that can done:
- Hunger games board game (pretty involved)
- Nerf Weapons Challenge
- There is a lecture series at Full Circle Bookstore.
- Professor from UCO will be doing library lectures
- Trivia
- Camo Art
For Hunger Games nights we have buttons to pass out to them.
There are lots of resources online, and highlighted on Pinterest.
Outreach now has a buzzer system that you can check out. Let Emily know when you need it.
We are talking about doing a “TEEN BIG READ” program. What this does is gets everybody reading the same book at the same time.
When you start to notice the next “big book trend” let’s work towards doing more programs based on popular books, like we are doing with Hunger Games. We could have online voting for the “next big book”.
Materials Selection is buying lots of camping and survival type books that can tie into Hunger Games. It’s always a great idea to have books displays about your program and in your program.
Emily – Summer Reading
3 age groups
Early childhood: Babies – Preschool
Children: Kindergarten - 6th
Teens: 7th - 12th
We are currently working with MAC to get all the artwork etc. ready to go. The brochure for all ages will be a postcard this year. We are putting the recognition for sponsor on the sheet a bit differently than you are used to seeing it. MAC is working on the postcards and game boards currently.
When a reader signs up, they will receive their game board. Goal one will be a coupon book and one other prize designated by age category, babies will get coupon book and ball, children and teens will get coupon book and bag. Goal 2 will be everybody will get a book. You need to think about how to display the books for the different age groups. Try not to have too many books out at a time but enough to choose from. As it has been, when a child receives goal 1 or 2 they will be entered in the drawing, and once all goals have been met will receive drawing slips.
This year we are doing all the different aged reading goals by time read. Each age level has a different timed goal, the game board will have blocks of time that they cross off when they have read that amount of time, leading up to completing a goal. Early Childhood each block is 15 minutes, 3 Hours to each goal, Children each block is 30 minutes, 6 hours to each goal and Teens each block is 60 minutes, 8 hours to each goal. There are extra bonus blocks on each game board, these blocks will include library activities such as; going to a program, writing book review etc.
We are hoping to build on this new format as time goes on. This year we have had lots of wonderful help from development with getting prizes and sponsors. This will be the first year having the early childhood so we tried to get the numbers as close as we could.
We hope that this will help to make reading fun. Studies show that children learning to read will do better once reading is a fun activity. Technology won't solve the problem.
