EXTRA - EXTRA - Training Times - September 2018

EduMinutes are short video playlists that offer professional development opportunities.

EduMinutes will appear in your "My Items" in EduBrite and are OPTIONAL. They are short video playlists with content created by professionals and Subject Matter Experts on the topic at hand through Lynda.com (they are not MLS specific). Often, the playlist videos are content from multiple courses with different presenters and are designed to save you time so you do NOT have to watch multiple full-length courses and can focus instead on specific topics.

Our current EduMinute Series focuses on the Performance Development Program's Core Competencies. In looking at the core competency "meets expectations" and the examples of "exceeds," short video vignettes were selected to:

  • help inspire ideas about that topic

  • learn something new

  • review, remember, and reflect on the information you may have already known

  • generate discussion with your team or supervisor

The first series is on Accountability and there are five playlists available (Series 4 just launched 09/04/18 and Series 5 is coming soon). The next series is on Communication.

You may have noticed "REQ" and "OPT" at the end of the course titles in EduBrite. This is to help identify which courses are required (REQ) and which courses are optional (OPT). When a course is required, an email notification will be sent via Outlook indicating the due dates and any all relevant information needed. Additionally, EduBrite is programmed to send out reminders based on the due dates to allow enough time for completion. We hope this adds a bit of clarity to all of the great courses going into EduBrite.

Wellness Works

The Wellness Works program starts over in October!!!!  For more information about this added benefit to MLS employees, check out the course in EduBrite "Wellness Works (REQ - NEO) - OPT for all other Staff." This short course will provide you with enough information to get started on the road to wellness.

Information Literacy 1(h) 47(m)

Information literacy is the ability to discover and use various types of information. It's an essential skill for navigating the Information Age. Watch this course to learn about strategies for finding information—from a library, archive, database, or the Internet—and the ethics of using it. Librarian Elsa Loftis discusses different types of resources and explains how to evaluate their usefulness and trustworthiness. She also shows how to avoid plagiarism and copyright infringement and accurately cite sources.

Code Adam

The Code Adam program is a powerful search tool for lost and potentially abducted children. It is designed to help businesses, parks, government buildings, and other establishments ensure that they have safety protocols in place to respond quickly and effectively to situations involving a missing child.

 

Access Workshops
Workshop 1

In Workshop 1, you will be introduced to the CARL.X and CARL.Connect software. You will learn tips and tricks for navigating around these programs and what to do when error messages appear. Attendees will also learn all about library accounts, including issuing new accounts, updating accounts, and handling blocks on accounts. Attendees will discuss common scenarios that frontline staff face regarding customer accounts and apply their knowledge by issuing practice accounts in both systems.

 

Workshop 2

Workshop 2 covers the most common circulation actions in CARL.X and CARL.Connect, including checkouts, returns, renewals, holds, and item maintenance. Attendees will discuss common scenarios that frontline staff face regarding circulation and handling problem materials. They will also apply their knowledge by practicing circulation procedures and item maintenance in both programs.

 

Workshop 3

Library Management teams will discover how to use reports and statistics that can help them make good decisions when managing their collections.  This session will go into detail about Carl-X reports and collectionHQ evaluation tools.  It will also offer an opportunity for the management teams to share ideas and tips for using Carl-X and collectionHQ.  

 

Collection Management Modules
Module 1: Collection Philosophy and Inviting and Appreciating Library Customer Comments (for all staff) (2 hours) 

Dealing with comments from our customers is an inevitable part of all of our jobs and how you respond to those comments will have a long-lasting influence on how those customers feel about our library. This session will provide you with an overview of the library’s collection philosophy and how you fit in with the overall management of the collection. And you will go away with positive steps for responding to customer comments.  

 

Module 2: Weeding and Promoting Your Collection (for all staff) (2 hours) 

Want to know about the tools that will assist you with managing your collection?  This session will provide you with an introduction for weeding by condition and utilizing basic reports from Carl-X and collectionHQ that will help you weed your collection.  You’ll also discover how to utilize tools to help you promote your collection.
