Announcements
Welcome to the September edition of Training Times! We have so many exciting training opportunities and events coming in the next two months, including FOCUS! Many of you have been inquiring about Emotional Intelligence training with Dr. Tom Massey. Due to high demand, we've scheduled one for October 29 at ED. If you're unable to attend this date, don't fret! You'll have another opportunity to take it on January 29, 2014.
With FOCUS coming up soon, we thought we'd share the breakout session descriptions and the presenter bios that will occur throughout the day. Registration for FOCUS begins on Monday, Sept. 9th. When you register, you'll have the option of choosing four sessions out of the 11 breakout sessions offered. You can check them by following the link under the Training Spotlight section below.
Last but not least, 3rd Quarter Safety Training is due on Friday, September 20th! As of today, 370 out of the 532 staff have completed their safety training. We had 100% of staff complete training for the 2nd quarter, so let's keep that going for this quarter!
See you in training!

Class Descriptions
SGR - Managing a Budget
The budget is the single most important policy document a local government adopts. It is the tangible translation of the organization's mission, vision, and values into practical action and service delivery. Capable budget management is one of the primary responsibilities of a manager. Managing a Budget instructs managers in financial terms and concepts, as well as how to implement a comprehensive system to budget efficiently and effectively. This class provides participants with practical insights and understanding regarding budget management.
SGR - Building High Performance Teams
In order to keep up with fast-paced change and have the ability to manage change effectively, a commitment to establish a greater degree of teamwork among employees with more responsibility delegated across the organization is needed. Building High Performing Teams focuses on the concepts of goal setting, empowerment, and measuring productivity. The class includes team-building exercises, positive communication techniques, and problem-solving procedures in order to prepare the participants for exceptional team leadership.
Prepare - Setting Effective Limits - Stacy Schrank and Linda Hyams
Setting limits is one of the most powerful tools that professionals have to promote positive behavior change for their clients, students, residents, patients, etc. Knowing there are limits on their behavior helps the individuals in your charge to feel safe. It also helps them to learn to make appropriate choices.
Helping Children with Sensory Sensitivities - Dr. Jane Humphries
The focus of this workshop will target several different areas. The first will be to assist participants in recognizing how children process their sensory environment in various settings and how children best learn in these settings. Although sensory processing is a complex and sometimes confusing topic, it is important for professionals working with parents/caregivers to have working knowledge of sensory development in young children. Second, simple solutions and recommendations for adults working with children to utilize in their environments will be introduced. The final area covered will include recommendations to assist adults in understanding how to manage children’s behaviors by addressing sensory needs with easy, inexpensive, and easily implemented activities and strategies. This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the different ways children process sensory information, strategies to help with developing sensory systems and activities that are applicable to all children in developing a successful sensory system in multiple environments.
