Training Times - March 2013

Announcements

We're Baaaaaaccck!!!

Hello staff!  It's been just over a year since the last issue of Training Times.  We're back and in a new format!  Training Times will now be in a blog/newsletter format integrated here on MyMetroLibrary.

There are several great training opportunities for this month, including two agency operations courses taught by Kevin Sendall (LO). These trainings are geared towards new hires, but also serve as great refreshers for vets of the system.  These courses have been revamped to include circluation tasks (Intro to V-Circ, library cards, and cash handlnig) formatted into a course called "Fundamentals of Circulation."  We also have a course titled "Fundamentals of Materials & Reserves" which encompasses the information in staff catalog & CyberMARS. These two courses take place of Intro to V-Circ and Staff Catalog & CyberMARS.

We are currently in our fourth year of partnership with Strategic Government Resources (SGR) in offering a series of courses related to supervisory, managerial, and service excellence.  This month's courses will take continue to take place at the Edmond CrossTimbers Complex and the Charles Johnson Neighborhood Svcs. Building in Midwest City.  Please take a look at the class description below.  We have continued to receive great feedback from staff members who have previously attended these courses.

We end the month with the Prepare Foundation course taught by Linda Hyams and Stacy Schrank.  This will be a great opportunity for staff who have yet to participate in this required training.  We are also beginning to offer Prepare Module courses - Workplace Bullying and Setting Effective Limits. These two courses expand upon the foundation course in dealing with difficult behavior and maintaining a civil, respectful, and safe work environment.

Please take a look at the training schedule below.  We hope to see you in class!

Participate in Stacy's study!

As many of you know, our own Stacy Schrank is currently pursuing a PhD in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma. In order to fulfill the degree requirements, Stacy will be conducting a study on learning styles and preferences of employees of the MLS.

Stacy is needing 200 staff members to take part in this study. All activities involved with the study will be conducted during work time and will be counted as training credit.Participation is voluntary and confidential.

If you have any questions, please contact Stacy at [email protected] or 606-3823.

Trainer Spotlight

Kevin Sendall (LO) is the system's newest staff trainer. He began teaching Fundamentals of Circulation and Fundamentals of Materials & Reserves this past November. He will be teaching Fundamentals of Circulation on March 6th and Fundamentals of Materials & Reserves on March 14th.

Kevin is an Extension Specialist for the MLS.  Next month will mark his 6th anniversary with the system!  Kevin's tenure with the MLS began when he volunteered taking care of the plants at the Choctaw Library. Eventually, he became a Library Aide at CT and moved up to become a Circulation Clerk.  After four years of service at the CT Library, Kevin moved into his current position as a rotating Extension Specialist.

His hobbies include: fishing, spending time outdoors, and learning how to fly fish for carp.  When he's not busy fishing, Kevin enjoys spending time with his wife and his three wonderful children - ages 22, 19 and 9.  Believe it or not, Kevin went toe-to-toe witht he defending national putt-putt champion in the 1987 Oklahoma State Putt Putt Championship.  He took the defending champ to 21 holes and lost.  When asked about what he enjoys most about working for MLS, he replied that it's the "great people that I get to meet and have been fortunate to work with!"

Class Descriptions

Fundamentals of Circulation

Taught by Kevin Sendall

Circulation is an integral function in our library system.  Each year the MLS circulates approximately 6 million materials system-wide using our own unique software known as V-Circ.  This program is also associated with other circulation-related functions such as handling monetary transactions and the copy/self-machines.  V-Circ is also essential in the issuance of library cards.

In this course, employees will be introduced to the Policies and Procedures related to the circulation of library materials and financial resources.  Employees will have the opportunity to explore the V-Circ program including the functions of issuing library cards and recording monetary transactions.

This course is designed for all new employees working in library operations and for support staff wishing to better understand the basic functions of our systems.

Leading By Example

Taught by SGR

As employees move into leadership roles, the example they set becomes increasingly important.  Leading By Example challenges partiipants to acknowledge both the existence of influence and the power that it wields. This class explores the concepts of leadership and helps the participant recognize leadership opportunities in the workplace.

Fundamentals of Materials & Reserves

Taught by Kevin Sendall

Customers and staff need to be able and effectively locate library materials using our online library catalog. Currently, the library system uses two Internet-based Graphic-User-Interface (GUI) programs - CyberMARS and Staff Catalog. CyberMARS is the interface the public uses both inside and from our website to search our library catalog for materials. Staff Cat is reserved for library staff and can only be searched from within the library using a staff computer. What is different is the amount of information available for each item (staff can see more).

Using these programs, staff and customers are able to reserve materials and have thm sent to a preferred library location for pick-up.  The reserve function is like placing your name on a waiting list for items currently checked out/on order or saving an item in your name until you can come to the library and check it out.

This course is designed for all new employees working library operations and for support staff wishing to better understand the basic functions of the system.

Book N' Library Rooms - Room Manager

Taught by Candace McDaniel

Room Manager is an MLS software program used to schedule events, reserve rooms, and track programming within the Metropolitan Library System. Why was Room Manager created?  Room Manager was designed to make collecting data about room use and programming statistics easier and more consistent. Two major imporvements are the ability to count attendance per meeting, program, or event and the ability to book single rooms or combined rooms in one simple step.

Prepare: Foundation Course

Taught by Linda Hyams and Stacy Schrank

This is a foundation course developed by the Crisis Prevention Institute.  Prepare training is designed to promote respect, service, and safety at work and can be used with customers, coworkers, and others you come into contact with in your life. Consisting of modules, the highly interactive training focuses on helping the participants learn how to:

  • Recognize the early warning signs of anger and hostility
  • Use personal space, body language, and paraverbal communication to relieve tension and defuse hostility
  • Foster respectful relationships and promote positive outcomes by using emphatic listening skills, and apply the skills and strategies learned to realistic confrontational situations you may encounter in the work place
