Training Times - June 2018

Welcome to the June edition of Training Times! Although there aren't many instructor led trainings for June and July (hello, Summer Reading!), we do have many courses available on Lynda.com if you're looking for something new to learn! Many of you have taken advantage of the 6,000+ courses Lynda.com offers. Remember, if you take any ‘work’ related Lynda.com courses, you can scan/email your certificates of completion to [email protected] or interoffice them to L & D to receive credit in EduBrite on your professional transcript.

We're excited to announce that in August, L & D will be launching an Enterprise Edition of Lynda.com that will be fully integrated within EduBrite. It will offer several learning and competency tracks geared towards staff and their professional development needs. We also plan to be taking the 'flipped approach' to training, by highlighting an online course then offering a face-to-face session to discuss and enhance learning. Because Lynda will be integrated within EduBrite, all course progress and completion will be documented meaning there will be no need for you to send in your completion certificates to L & D after the launch!

June is here, which means the heat is on! We all know the library is one of the best places for our customers to beat the heat, but sometimes it can be easy to forget to stay cool and hydrated, especially with all the activities surrounding the summer. Together, we can help ourselves and others avoid heat-related illnesses by following a few safety rules from the CDC and Health Care Coalition. Click here to view the full safety newsletter.

EduBrite also has a ~30 minute course over Heat Stress in the Workplace for professional development credit. If you're interested in taking this course, simply seek approval from your supervisor, subscribe, and complete the course at your convenience.

This is just friendly reminder that the MLS works with the law firm of McAfee and Taft and several of their courses are now available on EduBrite. They provide online courses dealing with legal and supervisor issues to many organizations (profit and nonprofit). These courses are NOT MLS specific. MLS has its policies and procedures, and unless otherwise noted those are not changing.  Should you have any questions, please contact your Supervisor or HUM.

We have added 12 optional courses to EduBrite that are available to staff.

Employer Obligation Under HIPAA
Americans with Disabilities Act – Supervisor
Americans with Disabilities Act – Non-Supervisor
Interviewing and Hiring
Importance of Employment Documentation
Introduction to Federal Employment Law – Supervisor
Diversity and Inclusion
Wage and Hour Rights and Responsibilities – Supervisor
Wage and Hour Rights and Responsibilities – Non-Supervisor
FMLA: Leave Rights and Responsibilities – Supervisor
FMLA: Medical Certification – Supervisor
FMLA: Notification Requirements – Supervisor

None of these courses are required (at this time but are optional). The supervisor courses are only available to supervisors. Please seek supervisor approval before subscribing to and completing any of the courses.

Besides Lynda.com launching for staff on EduBrite in August, we have several things to look forward to, including:

Collection Management Module 1: Philosophy and Customer Comments (Fall 2018 - Instructor Led Training)

Dealing with comments from our customers is an inevitable part of all of our jobs and how you respond to those comments will have a long-lasting influence on how those customers feel about our library. This session will provide you with an overview of the library’s collection philosophy and how you fit in with the overall management of the collection. And you will go away with positive steps for responding to customer comments.

Staff Day 2018 - "MLS Great Adventure" ~ 'Be Excellent to Everyone"

The Staff Day Committee is hard at work preparing for a fun day with great keynotes, breakouts, and activities. More information on the day will be up on MyMetrolibrary in the coming months.

CARL.X and CARL.Connect

If you missed any of the CARL.X or CARL.Connect trainings or if you are a new to the MLS, you will have a chance to attend these trainings when we pick back up in the fall after summer reading.
