Training Times - August 2013

Announcements

Welcome to the August edition of Training Times! It's hard to believe that Summer Reading is over! Today also marks the first day of school for OKC Public Schools.  After a lull in trainings during the months of June and July, PLA is gearing up for a busy late summer and fall training schedule.  We hope to see you in one or more trainings soon!

3rd Quarter Safety Training

Congratulations to MLS Staff for a 100% completion rate for 2nd Quarter Safety Training!  Now that we are in the 3rd Quarter, please be on the lookout for an e-mail from HUM and PLA regarding Safety Training on the Metro U LMS.  This quarter's training will be over Bloodborne Pathogens and will be due on Friday, Sept. 20.

Zinio

Our Zinio launch was wildly successful!  Brad Doss, our Recorded Books/Zinio rep, trained nearly 100 of our staff at eight of our libraries in the span of two days.  A month after our launch date (June 13), we had 250 customers sign up and 2,140 circulations.  Let's keep that Zinio train rolling!

Freegal Music

We're also very excited about Freegal Music launching at the MLS!  Freegal Music is a service that allows customers to access nearly 3 million songs.  One of the great features of Freegal is the ability to download music with no digital rights management restrictions.  Having no DRM restrictions means that our customers will be able to download music and transfer an mp3 file from their computers to a mobile device.  Customers will be allowed to download three songs per week.

Spotlight

The Lending Library

Did you know there is a hidden collection of titles located within the confines of the DN Library? Did you know only MLS staff are able to check out these materials?  Did you know these materials are not available on the shelf in our libraries? If you didn't, you have been missing out on some great resources!  Meet the Lending Library.

PLA maintains this collection of nearly 700 titles, with topics that range from leadership and management to creativity in the workplace.  There are also quite a few library specific titles that might interest you.  Also, if there are titles you think might benefit our staff, please send us some ideas! We're always looking to add to our collection.

So how do you check out these items? It's quite simple.  Go to the MyMetrolibrary homepage. Hover your cursor over 'Staff' and click MetroUniversity from the dropdown menu.  You will then be taken to a page with a few icons. Click on the 'Lending Library' icon.  The Lending Library catalog will appear.  From there you will be able to search or browse for titles and make check out requests. You will want to make sure you're signed into MyMetrolibrary to reserve the title for check out. Simply click the 'Reserve' link to request a book for check out.  An e-mail notification is sent to PLA and the title requested is sent your way!

If you have any questions about the Lending Library, please call Andrew at 606-3822.

Class Descriptions

Fundamentals of Circulation - Kevin Sendall

Circulation is an integral function in our library system. Each year the MLS circulates approximately 6 million materials system-wide using our own unique software known as V-Circ.  In this course, employees will be introduced to the policies and procedures related to the circulation of library materials and financial resources.  This course is designed for all new employees working in library operations and for support staff wishing to better understand the basic functions of our system.

SGR - Persuasive Communication

Managerial Leadership often involves evaluating alternative courses of action, drawing conclusions, and making reommendations for change. To successfully lead, the manager must be capable of not only evaluating and recommending the appropriate course of action, but also of communicating that recommendation in a mannger that is compelling and persuasive. Persuasive Communication provides the participant with an understanding of how to communicate well thought out recommendations in a manner that gets results.

SGR - Honing your Emotional Intelligence

Great leaders move their teams by igniting passion and inspiring success. This course acknowledges and explains the complex mix of social and interpersonal behaviors that incorporate intuition, character, integrity, motivation, communication ability, and relationship skills. This class includes a self-assessment to measure participants' strengths and areas for improvement in emotional intelligence and practical situational exercises.

Prepare - Foundation Course - Stacy Schrank & Linda Hyams

Prepare Training is designed to promote respect, service, and safety at work and can be used with customers, co-workers, and others you come in contact with in your life. Consisting of nine modules, the highly interactive training focuses on helping the participants learn how to: recognize the early warning signs of anger or hostility; use personal space, body language and paraverbal communication to relieve tensions and defuse hostility; and foster respectful relationships and promote positive outcomes by using empathic listening skills, and apply the skills and strategies learned to realistic confrontational situations you may encounter in the workplace.

Fundamentals of Materials & Reserves - Kevin Sendall

Customers and staff need to be able to efficiently and effectively locate library materials using our online library catalog. Currently, the library system uses two Internet-based Grafic-User-Interface (GUI) programs - CyberMARS and Staff Catalog. CyberMARS is the interface the public uses both inside and from our website to search our library catalog for materials. Staff Cat is reserved for our library staff and can only be searched from within the library using a staff computer.  This course is designed for all new employees working in library operations and for support staff wishing to better understand the basic functions of our system.
