Introducing SELF-e and Pressbooks

In February, we debuted a new digital collection from Biblioboard to connect readers with eBooks from indie publishers and authors. On April 11th, we’re rolling out new services to enable authors to self-publish their book and submit it to be shared with libraries across the U.S. and Canada. With Pressbooks, you can create, edit, format, and generate print-ready books and/or eBooks.

SH 620.6 Guidelines for Media

Purpose

The following guidelines apply to storing and sharing various media types including, but not limited to, photos, videos and music. Library employees may not store personal files, electronic or hard copy, on library premises (SH 620 Staff Use of Library Property and Services). MLS must employ these guidelines in order to keep the storage space and back up time at reasonable rates.

So You Think You Want to Be a Librarian?

Historically, libraries have been the gatekeepers of information so we haven’t been too concerned with justifying our value to the public. “We have the information. If you want the information, come get it.” Well, we had it, anyway. In his article “So You Think You Want to Be a Librarian?” Brian Kenney addresses the issue of change, both in the demeanor of libraries towards the public and the use of technology by libraries. He asserts that in order to thrive, libraries must shift their historical position from focusing on library holdings to focusing on their relationship with library users. We cannot expect users to do the legwork to connect with the library. It’s our job to design the library, both in its physical and virtual states, to be appealing, engaging and easy to use. Libraries must be responsive to the needs of their users and must seek the input of our users to create what Kenney calls “one of the best experiences of the day."

What We Think We Do, What They Think We Do

Another research article to rehash the same ol’ debate. New technology … relevance of the library … digital vs. virtual, etc. This article polls people, asking them about their feelings about the library. Some are nostalgic. Some are idealistic. Some are pessimistic. Some are clueless. But most really like us -- ‘us’ being libraries. However, most probably can’t answer the burning question … why are we – libraries -- here? The purpose of this Pew study was to find out how people are using the library.

Location Information

Each of the offices and libraries have unique schedules and in an effort to communicate the expectations that each office/library is able to meet we are dedicating a spot on the Intranet to include the following information:
