Safety Committee Meeting Minutes
Date: July 8, 2008
Attending: Kay Bauman, Denise Courts, Janet Brooks, Ric Rea, Ann Aliotta, Candace
McDaniel, Patrick Williams
Agenda:
- Review of past meeting minutes
- Welcome Ann Aliotta
- Quarterly Facility Inspections
- Bloodborne Pathogens Training Materials
- Quarterly Safety Training Reports
- Worker’s Comp Injuries
Discussion:
- The committee welcomes Ann Aliotta as a new member.
- Copies of inspection reports for the first quarter have been routed to each committee member and reviewed. There was discussion about how we are tracking the completion of maintenance requests and action items on these new reports. It was suggested that we add a notation area on the form for to indicate the time and date requests were made in order to track correction of deficiencies.
- Janet reported on her review of the materials currently available in the Safety Training Library. Specifically, she has reviewed Bloodborne Pathogens training materials and suggested that many of these materials be removed because they are outdated and do not contain complete information to satisfy OSHA training standards. Denise will update the library to contain only the powerpoint presentations and reading materials covering OSHA mandated training. It was decided to dedicate the 3rd quarter safety training to Bloodborne Pathogens training. Weekly safety slides will run periodically during the quarter to give everyone the opportunity to satisfy this annual mandatory training. Employees may use the powerpoint presentations or select materials from the training library.
- New Hire Training was discussed. There is still some confusion among the supervisors about what is needed to complete the training. Although there has been several communications sent and discussion at GOAL with all new hires, supervisors are still not sure what employees are supposed to do. Denise feels it is necessary to continue e-mail reminders in order to have some accountability for completion of training. Denise will create a spreadsheet for supervisors to use in tracking safety training. This will be for agency use only and will not be sent to Human Resources as reporting. The Webmaster is currently working on adding a New Hire Training folder to the intranet that will contain all mandatory safety training powerpoint presentations as well as the safety training report that can be printed out and signed by the supervisor upon completion of all training. This should help ensure everyone is getting the necessary initial training. This new folder should be available on the intranet by the end of July.
- Many of the managers have asked about the length of time they must keep copies of safety training reports. The Exposure Control Plan for bloodborne pathogens, which must meet Oklahoma Department of Labor requirements, indicates that the record of annual bloodborne pathogens training must be kept at the office or agency as well as in Human Resources for a period of three years.
- The committee reviewed the Worker’s Comp Report for the year to date. We have experienced six injury claims during 2008. Some of these injuries happened some time ago and were not reported until this year. A First Report of Injury must be completed at the time of the injury even if the employee does not seek medical attention immediately.
