Beyond Bias: What is Bias?

Course Date: On Demand

Course Duration: 10 min

Description: Leaders make decisions that change lives. From hiring, promoting, and dismissing employees to investing funds, betting on new ideas, and deciding on the future of the organization, leaders decide who adds and who takes away value for the organization. Unfortunately, bias against an individual’s race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, age, and other social identities can cause a leader to unintentionally come to faulty conclusions about an individual. Unchecked bias among leadership can result in failing to fully leverage talent, being too slow to notice new trends, and miscalculating risk. While overcoming bias has always been a challenge, it has become a necessary leadership skill in today's world. The globalization and diversification of the workforce, coupled with the increased social demand for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion has made understanding bias critical for anyone with leadership aspirations or responsibilities.

Understanding Race Bias

Course Date: On Demand

Course Duration: 20 min

Description: Racial bias and prejudice continues to impact negatively on the working lives of people from a BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) background. This course looks at the nature of the problem and sets out what we can all do to tackle it. While there has been a significant decline in overt racist behaviours over the past 40 or 50 years, subtle manifestations of racial bias continue to have a negative impact on people from a black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) background. Developed in partnership with Professor Binna Kandola, Senior Partner and co-founder of business psychology consultancy Pearn Kandola, this course takes a bold look at the nature of 'modern racism' and its influence in the workplace, and sets out steps that we can all take to ensure that our decisions are free from bias and that we behave in an inclusive manner that promotes true equality.

The need to feel like you belong doesn’t end when you enter the workplace. The workplace is another group to which you belong, and another way for you to define yourself. Although there may be many differences in coworkers’ personalities, behaviors and beliefs, it is important to avoid exclusive behaviors and learn to respect each others differences to productively work together as one team.
