Program Description: 
What country has the fastest growing economy in the world and is home to more than 1.3 billion people? China, of course! Elementary students, join us to create Chinese characters using ink and brushes while learning some introductory Chinese. Participants will learn more about the Chinese culture and language from our experienced instructor. Continue to explore the Chinese language and culture on your own through the Mango Language or Little Pim databases, as well as, the many other resources available through the library.

China, an important part of our international community, has more than 1.3 billion people, more than any other country, and is the world’s fastest growing economy. Learn about modern China, its people and unique language. Elementary students will have a brief introductory Chinese language lesson and enjoy making Chinese characters with ink and brush. Our teacher has lived in China 28 years and will share her first hand knowledge of Chinese language and culture. Learn about the many free library resources that can help you advance your learning of the Chinese language.

Chinese for Kids expands children's horizons, helps them appreciate the community of nations and highlights a possible career path in international relations and international business. It encourages the use of library resources to further their learning: books, CDs, DVDs, tablets, language learning programs Little PIM and Mango.

Satisfy Curiosity: Your libraries are centers that offer access to civic, cultural and community enrichment opportunities.
Why will this program be successful?: 
Families will value the opportunity to explore Chinese language and culture in this free program at the library. The teaching will be presented with age appropriate, motivational activities.
How will success be measured/determined?: 
Attendance of 10 to 16 students. Students will utilize additional library resources to further satisfy their curiosity stimulated by the program.

Ink and paper. (no more than $25) Teacher Fee ($100 for a one hour lesson with a maximum of 16 students in grades 1-5, or ages 6-11)
Final Comments: 
Sara Chen has experience teaching adult and child language learners. She has a special aptitude for language learning. She is fluent in Chinese(her first language)and English. She has not been a teacher with the Metro Libraries before and will need a background check. I have interviewed her extensively and had her present a sample lesson.
