Describe Project and Impact:
Metro hires one or multiple social workers to help provide services and programming to homeless and at-risk populations.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
We serve homeless patrons. We serve patrons who are at risk, who struggle with food and housing insecurity. Hiring one or more social workers on a temporary basis would give the library system immediate access to experts who could work with staff to build services and programs for these patrons--many of whom cannot become members because they have no permanent addresses--and to work directly with the patrons to find services and resources to better their lives. This individuals or these individuals could also have an impact on safety and comfort in our libraries by providing a third contact option besides library workers and security.
Why should we select this project?:
Because we have climate control, internet access, comfortable seating, and print collections, libraries are a draw to the homeless. We should recognize that this group of patrons may have different or extra needs and work to address those needs.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Because the position would be temporary with ongoing employment contingent on budgets of the future and success of the initial employees, attracting a standout to pioneer the position could be difficult. Additionally, paying another employee out of the pilot budget when no doubt several branches and departments have asked for additional staff out of the regular budget could be received poorly, and library staff would need to buy in and support this initiative and the person or people coming on board.
