Health Care Partnerships

Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service

Describe Project and Impact:
Providing library services to those with long term stays or visits in health care or rehabilitation facilities
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
To provide a small collection (largely playaway) in a local hospital so that patients and guests can check out materials while they stay or sit bedside. I envision this expanding to local dialysis centers and rehabilitation centers as well as throughout libraries in the county. I think the catch is that it would have to contain fresh, current, well-maintained materials and be advertised through the partner. For guests without cards, the partner facility could act as the 'cardholder' issuing a 30 day guest pass so that materials could be utilized. I would expect that for members without cards they would want to get one and those with cards would utilize them.
Why should we select this project?:
It's a way to expand out outreach into the community and put library services 'front of mind' locally.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
Our ability to issue cards remotely could be a challenge for those who want their own. Dependent on interest from local partner.
Source of Inspiration:

My inspiration comes from personal experience. No one picks up the janky well read donated books and magazines in hospital waiting room. They are out of date. They are tattered. When you spend countless days and hours in a hospital, waiting, you need things to occupy your time and your mind.
