Laptop Kiosk

Type of Pilot Project:
Public Service
Describe Project and Impact:
The addition of a laptop kiosk would allow for more PCs with minimum impact on used facility space.
Project Description and Expected Outcomes:
The addition of a laptop kiosk at Almonte will give our members more PCs to use with less wait time. Almonte has one of the highest PC usage numbers in the System, and on many occasions the wait time is so long (one hour or more) that members leave frustrated; some do not return for several months as a result of the bad experience. It is hoped that the 12-latop dispensing kiosk will give more options for our members than the heavily-used desktops and the iPad dispensing Media Surfer (tablets are less utilitarian than laptops in general).
Why should we select this project?:
Because in the era of "less is more," libraries face the challenge of increasing services with a limited amount of space in our facilities. The addition of additional desktops may take up to 80 sqft per desktop, while a laptop kiosk housing 12 laptops will take up the same amount of space as a single desktop. This pilot project may very well pave the way for kiosks System-wide and revolutionize how we deliver PC service to our members.
Constraints, Limitations, or Dependencies:
The initial expense of this project is the single biggest constraint (costs are detailed below). Also, there is a greater chance for a laptop to be stolen from one of our facilities than a hardwired desktop.
Source of Inspiration:

Several library systems nationwide have successfully integrated the laptop kiosk approach in delivering service to their members. Examples include the Nashville Public Library, Milwaukee Public Library, and the Santa Clara Public Library to name a few.
