Program Description:

Come hang out with NASA OSGC MTPE Ambassador, Kendall Dobbs, in a hands-on, aerospace education, learning session. We will discover how playdough & food coloring can help us understand lava flow and how toy cars & film canisters can explain Newton’s First Law of Motion. Participants will be able to take home lava mountains & miniature rockets!

MLS's goal is to grow smarter communities, one person at a time. This program allows tweens to have hand-on experiences regarding aerospace education with a NASA OSGC MTPE Ambassador.

Not only do the kids get to do hands-on experiments and activities, but they get to take home their creations!

Lava Layering Purpose - to learn about the stratigraphy of lava flows produced by multiple eruptions. Supplies: - 4oz paper cups - Aluminum trays (9x13ish) - Masking tape - Tablespoon - Baking soda - ¼ measure cup - Vinegar - Food coloring (4 colors) - Playdough (same 4 colors as above) - Plastic knife 3-2-1 Pop! Purpose – Newton’s First Law of Motion Supplies: - Sandwich Ziplocs - Toy car - Top - Unsharpened pencil - Bouncy ball - Inner locking film canister - Package of colorful notecards - Alka Seltzer - Water - Scotch Tape

Final Comments:

I think this will be a successful program even though I was not able to get it in before the INFO magazine was published. I will make posters for our location to advertise it and because of the STEM nature of the program, I believe it will be successful.

It was expensive getting the materials for the program, but the kids loved the program. We had a high interest in this program and high attendance. I believe it was because of the subject matter. I think I'll need to do more NASA/STEM related programs in the future.
