The V-Circ Message Tab (when originally discussed at Circ Forum was called Drop Down Box and Managers Comment Box and then referred to as Flags) was launched on August 20, 2012.

The table below explains where the message appears, how long before it automatically drops off as well as which location(s) may remove the message.   While the software does not restrict which staff may set any of the messages, only the manager of library operations is to set the security alert message and only after the manager has suspended a customer’s library privileges.

Message Visible to customer via CyberMars Opens to message tab on VCirc Auto drop-off Who clears
Update phone number No Yes No Any library
Customer requests to check ID No Yes No Any library
Damaged/Missing materials form sent to customer  No Yes, only at the originating library 6 months Originating library
Lost item(s) or card held at desk Yes* Yes, only at the originating library 3 months Originating library
Uncataloged item on reserve shelf Yes*    Yes, only at the originating library 1 month Originating library
Security alert: Local suspension or warning letter** No Yes, only at the originating library 6 months Manager at originating library

*Originating library code included in message
** Security Alert must be placed by Manager of Library Operations only

The Security Alert message, if used, must be completely overseen by the manager at the location where the suspension is taking place.  If the suspension is for less than 6 months, the manager will need to remove the message manually.  Additionally, if the security message was used note that fact on the Unusual Incident Form.

Remember that there is an important distinction between a suspension and a banning (see the AL 320.1 Responding to Disruptive Conduct [1]).  Suspension is only at the local level while a ban is at the System level and only the Executive Director may ban a customer.  When a customer is banned, and has an MLS library card, Circ Control places a Special Stop on the card.
