Overdrive App Phasing Out

Overdrive recently announced their intentions to phase out the Overdrive app. This won’t happen any time soon; there’s no set timeline, but two developmental milestones that will advance the phaseout are adding the ability to import/synchronize wish lists to Libby and making Libby compatible with most accessibility programs and apps.
Customers who are devoted Overdrive app users don’t need to worry. The phase-out will be careful and slow. Customers still have plenty of time to familiarize themselves with Libby or use the Overdrive app for accessibility reasons. If you have yet to use Libby with our Overdrive collection, now’s a good time to familiarize yourself with it. If you are already a Libby user, highlight some of the benefits to Overdrive app converts and new users.
CIS regularly recommends these features to customers:
- Simple, step-by-step on-boarding the first time you open the app
- When installing Libby on a phone or tablet with location services, it uses those services to locate you in the Metro service area, thus saving the time having to search for Metro
- Simplify the sign in process using only your Metro account number and last name, i.e. you don’t have to remember whether you previously signed in with an Adobe ID or an Overdrive account or with a Facebook account
- Parents can easily manage family accounts by adding everyone’s account number to Libby
- If you’re already using Libby on one device, you can use a setup code to easily copy your library accounts, loans, and holds in Libby to another device – soon Libby will include syncing between devices
- Loans and holds are automatically added to your Shelf, so you can easily find all your books in one place
- If connected to Wi-Fi, borrowed titles download automatically
- Start reading immediately after you borrow; no need to choose a file format
- See your at-a-glance progress through each book on your Shelf
- Set browsing and list preferences to show only the content you're interested in
- Set a preferred reading format and only see titles in that format (i.e.: Kindle)

Are you aware of a specific timeline for adding the ability to import/synchronize wish lists to Libby? That's the only thing that's kept me sticking with Overdrive. I get most of my materials by going to my insanely long wishlist and then seeing what's listed under available now.
All I know is they are actively working on that but no definite timeline for when it will be released. You're not the only one hanging on for wishlists!
Thank you, Sadie!
I am a Libby super-fan, but I'm wondering if they are aware of the battery issues their app creates. If an audiobook is playing in the background, it really drains in iOS. Just wondered if this has been discussed with the vendor?
Thanks for all you do! Libby is an awesome product! :)
I hadn't heard of that issue but I will definitely pass it along to Overdrive. Thanks!
I just noticed this too! I'm glad that I am not the only one!
Heard back from our rep: Turns out this is a known issue with our developers, and we have a bug ticket created. We’ve added you to the list of partners that have let us know they’re experiencing this issue. We’ll keep you posted as we get updates from the team.
