Construction Updates - September 23, 2014

GENERAL

  • On 9/10, MLS presented a draft list of OKC Libraries Capital Improvements that are contemplated over the next 5 year.  It included funding for repairs to Downtown, construction of Almonte in 2022 and added work at Belle Isle, Ralph Ellison, Southern Oaks and Wright.  A recap of the draft request will be sent to the AdTeam.  A formal request is to be sent to later this month.

BETHANY

  • The City of Bethany continues to take steps towards the funding of the expansion and renovation of the BE library.  MLS has provided Bethany with some information about the architect selection process and has requested a meeting to review.

CAPITOL HILL

  • MS+R & Guernsey Architects led MLS and OKC through our 1st Schematic Design meeting on 9/11.  Several options for the layout of the interior library were discussed.  It was agreed that the entry would be on the south side, facing the new parking lot. The work room is to be located on the west side to allow delivery access off of Hudson. Several exterior schemes were also presented. These, produced with a 3- D printer, moved from a more traditional to modern appearance.  See page 2.  Image 3 was selected.
    • “Rough draft” floor plans, based upon these discussions, are expected today (9/17/14).
  • An updated schedule shows a “MOVE-IN” date of March 2017 allowing Summer Reading 2017 to be held in our new library.
  • OKC continues to work on the securing the land need for the expansion.
  • The process of determining our temporary space needs continues.  The options range 0 to about 7,000 sf.  The schedule calls for MLS to move out after summer reading next year.

EDMOND PARKING

  • The City of Edmond continues to work with St Mary’s church.
  • Edmond has hired a firm to conduct a Customer Service Survey.  MLS is developing several questions which will address current and future library services needs.
  • I attended Edmond’s Capital Projects Task Force Committee meeting in 9/16. They are working on a process to “identify & prioritize” the capital projects.  The process is expected to include public meetings, citizen surveys and interviews with city staff and the stakeholders. While a 2nd library has been on the “list” for many years, we have a long ways to go.
    • Per the AdTeam meeting, it was suggested the MLS will need to review all capital project needs.  This will need to be done in conjunction with any request for Edmond funding.

JONES

  • Studio was released on 9/2 to proceed with the final design phase, Construction Documents.  Our next submittal (60 %) is due on October 3rd.
  • An updated schedule was reviewed on 9/15.  It shows construction starting in early next year.
  • Jones & MLS are looking at ways to control the qualifications of the contractors who will be bidding on this project.

NORTHWEST

  • Warranty Work continues.
  • OKC is continues to look for funding for derrick glazing and the drainage channel work.
