CONNECT Forum Announcement - December 2012

Meeting Information:

Date: December 11, 2012
Time: 2:00-4:00 pm
Location: Southern Oaks Library

Join with fellow librarians around the system for an afternoon of camaraderie and information sharing. Our profession is rapidly changing before our eyes and, like it or not, we’ve got to change with it while holding on to our core values. In this session we’ll be examining our professional identity as librarians as we have open-ended discussions about what it is we do and why we do it.

We’ll have a fun small-group activity to get us rolling and then later we’ll use media representations of librarians to kick off a discussion about who librarians really are, what our core values are and how we can use that information to improve our performance. Think about your favorite library characters from books, television, and film and be ready to share and discuss.

CONNECT Minutes for September 2012

Changes in CONNECT planning committee: Buddy Johnson (DN) will be the new chair of this committee starting in December, rotating in for Angela Thornton. Barbara Beasley is also rotating off of the committee to be replaced by Julie Ballou (NW). Kim Edwards (DN) has also been rotated off of the committee.

Trying to find the customers you aren’t serving can be a difficult task. Angela shared some tools available through MLS such as Demographics Now and the Telephone Survey.

Who Aren’t You Serving?

September 11th at Del City from 2pm-4pm

Bring ideas and questions to this meeting about how you have reached out to people in your community who weren’t already in the library or who you want to reach but aren’t sure how to do it. We’ll brainstorm and share some thoughts about how we can help each other connect with our communities. Sign up with your supervisor!

CONNECT Minutes for June 2012

The Changing Face of Reference: Julie Ballou spoke briefly about the changes implemented in Northwest such as the combined service desk and phones being answered in the back room first, and the challenges some of these changes have presented to serving reference customers. Julie then took the group on a tour of the building.

Sharing – After the break, we had reference service topics suggested by a variety of librarians

CONNECT Forum Announcement - June 2012 Meeting

The next CONNECT forum for librarians will be Tuesday, June 12th, at 2pm at the Northwest Library.  The topic for this forum is "The Changing Face of Reference."  We'll take a tour of Northwest to see how they have incorporated changes in reference service in the new building and then have group discussions about these and other changes to reference services in the field of librarianship.  You can sign up to attend through your supervisor.

CONNECT Planning Committee Minutes for April 2012

We talked about subject matter and locations for the remaining dates for 2012. They are: June 12th – The Changing Face of Reference (NW); September 11th – Who Aren’t You Reaching? (DC), and December 11th – It Was a Wonderful Year (SO). All times will be from 2pm-4pm.

The recap for the March meeting at the Service Center was positive; attendees had positive things to say about the tour and the information received. Attendance was lower than normal, but that could have been based on many factors such as PLA week, Spring Break, difficult parking at location, etc.

CONNECT Minutes for March 2012

CONNECT Planning Committee Minutes for January 2012

In attendance: Angela Thornton, Barbara Johnson, Barbara Beasley, Kim Edwards, Susan Hutchins, Clyde Herrod, Debbie McPherson We finalized our agenda for the next forum on March 13th.

That forum will be held at the Service Center and will include a tour and a Q & A time with Books By Mail, ILL, CAT, and Tech Processing. We spoke with Pauline Rodriguez, Heidi Johnson, and Sharon Maine and explained how the forums normally work, the expected attendance, and how we could rotate the groups in a logistically feasible manner. Heidi will be out of the office during that time period, but will help arrange for someone to coordinate the tours. The current plan is to break the attendees up into three rotating groups, with two taking a tour and the third watching a powerpoint of the history of how these groups came to be at the Service Center and how the ideas behind the Service Center were developed. We will cap attendees at 30 participants due to parking and keeping a workable number of extra people in the building.
